January 30th at 14:00 The Language Technology Initiative gathered in the House of Sciences of the University of Latvia to share the newly created study modules and courses, as well as the innovations of research. We invite you to apply for the new study courses in the spring semester at the Faculty of Computer Science of the University of Latvia, the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Latvia and the Riga Technical University (RTU)!

The soon available study courses and modules (starting with spring semester of 2024) were presented at the event by Inguna Skadiņa, professor of the Faculty of Computer Science, Jana Kuzmina, associate professor of the Faculty of Humanities and RTU Professor Marina Platonova. Research aspects were also presented by Normunds Grūzītis, associate professor of LU MII, and Dr.sc.comp, co-founder of the company "Tilde". Andrejs Vasiļjevs.
 
Inguna Skadiņa reveals that starting next week (spring study semester), new study courses are available at the Faculty of Computer Science of the University of Latvia, as part of the new study module Language technology module
 
 
According to Jana Kuzmina, in the spring semester study courses and modules will be available at the Faculty of Humanities of LU at various study levels and programs:
Latvian BSP and English, European languages and business studies BSP study courses
 
Marina Platonova presented the new study courses that will be available in the spring semester at the Riga Technical University. Study courses and modules will be available even to non-RTU students thanks to the MOOC platform!
  • Computerized semantics and pragmatics (Tatyana Hramova, Tatyana Smirnova, Zane Senko, Oksana Ivanova, Alina Vagele-Kricina, Tatyana Menise, Marina Platonova)
  • Multimodal digital semiotics (Tatyana Menise, Tatyana Smirnova, Tatyana Hramova, Marina Platonova, Alina Vagele-Kricina, Oksana Ivanova, Zane Senko)
  • Digital sentiment analysis (Tatyana Hramova, Tatyana Smirnova, Zane Senko, Oksana Ivanova, Alina Vagele-Kricina, Tatyana Menise, Marina Platonova)

The study course presentations were followed by the presentations of Normunds Grūzītis and Andrejs Vasiļjevs on natural language processing research. Presentations highlighted how national language resources and language models and toolkits are helping language technology research, as well as the large use of language models and technologies are an asset for localizing learning materials, as well as other topics.
At the end of the event, led by Daina Jāņkalne, a panel discussion was held, during which the presenters  talked about language technologies in Latvia - about public interest in it, various risks of AI, new study courses and other topics.
