From 24 to 26 June 2026, University College London (UCL) hosted an international online Summer School in Corpus Linguistics. The three-day intensive programme provided participants with an introduction to English corpus linguistics and practical methods for language data analysis. The Summer School covered a range of contemporary topics in corpus linguistics, including the theoretical foundations of the field and their application to English language research, corpus methodology and research design, corpus-based approaches to syntactic, semantic, and discourse analysis, the study of World Englishes, fundamental statistical methods for linguistic research, and practical work with UCL's ICE-GB and DCPSE corpora and the accompanying ICECUP corpus analysis software.
In March 2026, the seminar series "Visualising Digital Discourse" concluded. The seminars were delivered to the academic staff of the Faculty of Humanities by Crispin Thurlow, Professor of Language and Communication at the University of Bern and an internationally recognised scholar in applied linguistics, critical discourse analysis, and sociolinguistics.
The seminar series introduced participants to the theory, research methodology, and analytical approaches of digital discourse visualisation. Participants explored key concepts related to digital discourse, language ideologies, and media ideologies, as well as methodological frameworks for analysing digital visual materials within cultural and media contexts. In the concluding session, the theoretical and methodological perspectives developed throughout the series were applied in a practical case study examining representations of young people in stock photography used across digital media.
